Why the NBA Should Expand to Rural Kentucky

Don’t discount the value of radius!

Rumor has it that the NBA will discuss expansion soon.

This means adding two two new teams — growing from 30 to 32.

In the late 20th century, it was common for the league to add new teams. But it hasn’t expanded since 2004 when the Charlotte Bobcats were reestablished after the team moved to New Orleans in 2002, creating the now Pelicans.

This brought the league to 30 teams, a number it has been comfortable at for 20 years.

But expansion has been on the minds of fans for years now, and commissioner Adam Silver seems interested in introducing the NBA to two new markets.

In February, Silver mentioned Las Vegas and Seattle as two cities that would receive consideration.

Both cities make sense: Seattle housed the SuperSonics for 40 years before the franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, creating the Thunder, while Las Vegas is one of the largest entertainment markets in the world.

Other cities like Nashville, Montreal, and Vancouver have been discussed as well.

The NBA has an opportunity to pass on all of those cities, however, and place a team in a small town smack-dab in the middle of three semi-large…
