Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump Fight a New Battle: Tax Credits for Electric Vehicles
Newsom believes in green energy and Trump doesn’t. Who will win?
In a lot of ways, California is a dreamland for liberals.
The state is always on the front edge of pushing and enacting left-leaning policy, especially when it comes to energy. Governor Gavin Newson has led this charge.
In 2022, Newsom laid out some goals for his state. By 2045, Newsom hoped California would:
- cut air pollution by 71%
- slash greenhouse gas emissions by 85%, and
- reduce fossil fuel consumption to less than one-tenth of modern-day standards
The final goal is the one most people will likely pay attention to, as fossil fuels play such a large role in emissions. So in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to end President Joe Biden’s $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, Newsom announced a plan to offer his own credit for California residents (or simply add on to what the state already has in place).
